 cork

Cork
Cork can be a great option for workplaces such as a kitchen or crafting area as it’s soft under foot and forgiving if you drop something. Cork is also naturally warmer which can be very appealing in Wisconsin.

Cork has a multitude of green characteristics including the way that it’s acquired, by stripping most of the outer bark from the cork oak tree. This regular stripping does the tree no harm, and the bark grows back, to be stripped again every nine years. The cork oak trees live for 200 years or so, and the forests, called Montados, are highly prized and passed down through generations of families in the cork-producing business. Cork processing is relatively straightforward with the cork sheets being cured, boiled and pressed. Scraps are collected and re-used so that almost nothing is wasted in this process.

One draw-back to the eco-friendliness of cork in North America is that it comes from Europe, therefore, one must consider fuel consumption from shipping the cork.

This draw-back of shipping is counter-balanced by the urgent need to preserve the cork oak forests. Due to the decline in the global cork market, there is more forest clearing of the cork forest ecosystems, thus endangering cork trees. The decrease in demand for cork has devalued the forests, leading to sales or even abandonments of the once priceless land. Cork products such as flooring will help keep the forests intact and support a sustainable form of agri-forestry, therefore, your purchase of cork flooring will help impact the continuation of cork forests.
